Biochemical and Molecular Anthropology Laboratory

Biochemical and Molecular Anthropology Laboratory provides a platform for the training of students pursuing their masters, doctoral and post-doctoral research work in areas of biological anthropology. This laboratory is shared and academically supported by seven faculty members of the department in their research work related to Human population genetics, Molecular anthropology and Genetic epidemiology. We have facilities like UV-spectrophotometer, genomic DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR and RT-PCR. We also have DNA bank of populations from several tribal and caste populations collected from different ecological zones of India. Presently, there are 37 registered research scholars pursuing their doctoral and M.Phil. works on topics encompassing genetic diversity, cardiovascular diseases, hemoglobinopathies, pregnancy complications, high altitude adaptations, infectious diseases and neurological disorders. This laboratory is well supported by several research projects funded by DBT, UGC, DST and ICMR.
